Have you ever considered Naming Your Year?
Naming Your Year is an annual tradition designed to establish a focus and guide your actions throughout the year. This concept was introduced to me and has proven to be an effective goal-setting tool. Naming Your Year is simple, fun and the perfect conversation starter at dinner parties… interested?
The year I coined ‘Progress Not Perfection’ coincided with turning my dream of creating an online space, into reality. Reflecting on this focus encouraged me to ‘progress’ through web design, coding and the world of social media. The challenging part was convincing the ‘perfectionist’ in me that it didn’t have to begin ‘perfect’; now is the time to stop procrastinating and just start. I then went on to build the site and community, while honing my story-telling ability and running a household.
Conversations With My Sister began as simple conversations with my sister and is now inspiring a new culture and awareness by highlighting small things, which can have a positive impact. I am passionate about sharing how ‘Keeping It R.E.A.L’ is taking me on the journey of striving to balance a happy, healthy, sustainable lifestyle. Being a guest writer on the website Cool People Doing Cool Things is such an exciting invitation because it means making new connections, building relationships with like-minded people and having inspiring conversations. Interacting with ‘cool people’ is one of the ‘cool things’, which makes blogging such a whole lot of fun!
Enough chat - let’s get started.
1. Name Your Year
As we are at the end of the first quarter of 2015, time is of the essence. No need to delay your theme name until next year; January is not the only month you can start to focus on a happiness plan and establish new habits.
2. Invite your ‘Tribe’ to join in the conversation
Involve the people around you with your annual intention and invite them to name their year. Together, you can make each other accountable, set reminders and continually support each other - safety in numbers.
3. Pen to paper, fingers to keyboard - ‘2015 The Year of/where…’
Just sit down and Name Your Year - there is no right and wrong, just have some fun with it! Remember to write your focus where you will regularly see it, stick it on a post-it-note on the bathroom mirror, fridge door, Instagram bio - whichever space will serve you best.
4. Allow yourself to be flexible and always celebrate the wins
As the year progresses, you might need to ‘tweak' your theme to continue to move forward. And remember, when you reach important milestones - celebrate! This boosts your confidence, tops up your batteries and sustains your energy.
One of the great outcomes of sharing your chosen theme is the opportunity to have a positive impact on someone else’s life. Your annual theme may just be the encouragement needed to inspire someone else to action.
As life continues to move at a faster pace, year after year, it’s important to schedule time for reflection. Taking a moment to look back enables you to use the positive and negative lessons learnt, to continue to move towards your ultimate life ambition. Think of these annual ‘Naming Your Year’ themes as stepping stones along the precious and exciting adventure that is your life.
I sincerely hope the suggestion to Name Your Year will go on to have a positive impact on how you approach your everyday journey. Looking forward to continuing this conversation with you and sharing your experiences throughout the year!
P.S. I unofficially named my year 'The Year of the Rollercoaster' in my first few conversations with Shea... I think I might stick with it :) It's been a crazy, fun, thrilling ride so far. Here's to the rest of 2015! Amy
