Guest contributor Shea from Conversations With My Sister introduced herself a couple of weeks ago on the Cool People Doing Cool Things blog. We talked all things Naming Your Year for positive goal-setting and living the life you've always imagined. Lucky for you, Shea has even more wisdom to share about Keeping It REAL. Let's all strive to live happier, healthier and sustainable lives, one positive step at a time.
Bloggers have an incredible passion to share new and exciting discoveries to inspire their online ‘tribe’. The real buzz comes when the impact of these stories generates positive actions and interesting conversations within this wider audience. It’s through committing to a regular writing routine that my goals have been fine-tuned and a culture of Keeping It R.E.A.L. has been established. This theme sums up everything that is important to me and acts as a daily checklist as I strive to balance a happy, healthy, sustainable lifestyle.
Conversations With My Sister is where you’ll find my musings and conversations, gathered along the journey of Keeping It R.E.A.L. A collection of researched ideas and simple steps, which provide everyday opportunities to make a positive difference. You can sit back and relax with a coffee, enjoy the stories and join in the conversation with a growing community of like-minded people.
Here is how the culture of Keeping It R.E.A.L is helping to inspire awareness through highlighting positive habits and the ‘why’ behind my choice to lead by example.
[R] - RESPECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT
Respecting Our Environment is a constant challenge worth rising to - together we can protect our future planet.
It was during our annual holiday to the coast a few years ago that I read about Tim Silverwood and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is the name given to the collection of rubbish in our oceans. This ‘patch’ is slowly being carried by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre and ultimately being ingested by marine life. The story, introducing Tim and the ambassadors of Take3 For The Sea, was so inspiring that I read out the key points of the article to my then-five-year-old little man.
My lightbulb moment occurred when our little man began climbing the rocks along the creek to collect plastic bags that had become lodged, and hearing him encourage his friends to join in and help him to protect our marine animals.
Our long-term solution of limiting single-use plastic, minimising waste and searching for everyday ‘sustainable’ solutions really began when he showed me a photo he took of a plastic bag floating down the creek towards the ocean, and he was really distressed explaining that he couldn’t reach it.
[E] - EXPLORE AND DISCOVER
My love of Exploring and Discovering new things has been with me as long as I can remember, as has the passion for writing about and sharing tales from these adventures. My mind begins constructing a story as the experience unfolds, and I am always the annoying person with the camera out capturing the moment. Travelling is my ‘happy’ place and I am extremely grateful and super keen to share the amazing experiences I have been lucky enough to have had in my life so far.
[A] - A POSITIVE IMPACT
The CWMS purpose is to inspire a new culture and awareness by highlighting small changes, which all add up to having A Positive Impact. Some ideas you might consider focusing on are: quality family time, supporting local business and community, embarking on a ‘healthy’ pantry-overhaul for long term wellbeing, and keeping it green by implementing a few ‘re’ words into your everyday routine - reuse, recycle, repurpose, repair, reduce, refuse, remove, reconnect…the choices are endless.
[L] - LIVING CONSCIENTIOUSLY
As a parent of two gorgeous children, it’s become super important to me to Live Conscientiously and make educated decisions based on my own research, values and beliefs. Following the ‘herd’ is not my first instinct; instead, time is invested in research and decisions are only made after educated opinions have been explored. Creating positive habits and leading by example has become especially important so our impressionable children have strong role models to follow.
As cliche as it might sound, we really only get one planet and one shot at living this life - it is my intention to live a life I am proud of. Every day I strive to balance activities which make me happy, make healthy choices for my wellbeing and slowly but surely increase constructive, sustainable habits to support this lifestyle. By regularly sharing these everyday changes, I genuinely hope my enthusiasm for positive change becomes contagious.
